GRE General and Subject Test
GRE scores, both General and Subject examination of the applicants
choice, are extremely helpful to demonstrate general quantitative
aptitude, English language skills, and to see how deeply and
expertly the
candidate has been able to prove one undergraduate discipline.
Our most successful applicants tend to score above the 90th percentile
on both the GRE General quantitative and the GRE Subject Test.
An
individual with an incomplete background for any one of the GRE
Subject tests (e.g., a dual biology and mathematics major) should
attempt the examination for which he/she is best prepared. We
do have
some experience in interpreting GRE scores in such cases.
Other examinations (such as the MCAT) can at times substitute
for one GRE exam. We sometimes waive one GRE test for M.S. applicants,
but only under exceptional can we waive both GRE General and
Subject tests. It is important to emphasize that the GRE Subject
examination is nearly always required for direct admission to
the Ph.D. track. Finally, applicants for financial support should
be aware that most
of our awards are merit-based, and the GRE examinations help
support the application. Thus, all other items being equal, a
candidate without GRE scores may be at a serious disadvantage
in competing for
support.
